Nurture an inspiring group of people around you, their influence is monumental
Relationships have a big impact on the goals we set and whether we achieve them. Reflect on the people you spend the most time with. Don’t underestimate their influence.
We are all susceptible to a contagion effect. Even if we don’t realise it, we are vulnerable to the behaviours, attitudes, habits, ambitions, and moods of the people around us. Have a think about your inner circle:
- Do they inspire you?
- Whose interests do they protect: yours or theirs?
- Do they represent the person that you want to become?
- Do they help you to reach further than you might otherwise?
- Do they have your back?
- Do they share the same values and view of the world?
- Do they support you without judgement through both failures and successes?
- Will they give you honest well-intentioned feedback, when asked?
- Do you feel more energetic and focused after you spend time with them?
Let the people who tick these boxes in even closer this year. Reciprocate.
Distance yourself from the people who don’t cut it. Don’t let them sap your energy and aspiration with their negativity.
I do a mapping exercise with my clients to double-check that they spend time on essential networks. Not just ‘essential’ as in generating opportunities but also as a crucial source of feedback, validation, and ideas.
You don’t need super-sized networks either: five real relationships will have far more impact than fifty haphazard connections. Who is in your inner circle?
